NBA Free Agency 2018: 10 biggest player option decisions
8. Danny Green
Following an inconsistent season, Danny Green’s option to return to the Spurs sits at $10 million. Entering this season, the $10 million threshold rested directly on that perfect line for him to determine his own future and value. In other words, the scenario allowed him to play into or out of his contract.
At 30-years-old and a dip in his 3-point shooting from last year, Green’s ability to attract a long term contract is unclear. It seems reasonable a contender is looking for a 3-and-D role player to bolster depth and provide veteran leadership from a Spurs culture which radiates it. However, pending what similar players such as Avery Bradley receive in the open market impacts what Green will be able to receive. With Bradley’s value in question, Green may suffer from some of the consequences.
That being said, if Kawhi Leonard officially leaves San Antonio, the Spurs need Green as much as ever. It may be mutually beneficial for Green to opt-in. Doing so would allow Green to display the past few years were flukes as a result of injury or whatever else, and earn a strong contract the following year. Additionally, the Spurs would maintain some of their core on the perimeter intact. Ingrained in every member of the organization, the Spurs will survive without him, though it would be a hell of a lot easier to thrive with him.
A major decision faces Green in the coming days. The Spurs need him, and his role will be well established. That being said, the value he is able to receive in the open market relies on where some of the other dominoes follow and the value that ensues. Regardless, no one would question or fault him for opting-in.
