Who won Dual in Detroit Race 1? Here are the complete Dual in Detroit Race 1 results from the Verizon IndyCar Series’ first of two races in Detroit.

The Verizon IndyCar Series started its Detroit doubleheader on Saturday, and the first half of the 2018 Dual in Detroit was full of flying cars — some literally — before Scott Dixon captured his 42nd career win.

Marco Andretti led the field to green for the first time since 2013 and held it consistently for the first 23 of 70 laps. His teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay inherited the lead, before Scott Dixon took it from him on Lap 33 and was never seriously challenged the remainder of the day.

Front-runner and defending race winner Graham Rahal saw his day end on Lap 47 when his car clipped a curb and plowed into the opposite wall, bringing out the race’s first yellow flag. Rookie Santino Ferrucci, taking the seat of Zachary Claman De Melo, went flying into another wall with 15 laps to go:

Coming back after sitting out the Indy 500, James Hinchcliffe pulled into the pits early to try and gain some track position and it cost him. He was penalized for a pit exit violation and given a drive-through penalty that dropped Hinch to 20th after starting ninth. He ultimately finished 11th.

The Dual in Detroit victory ties Scott Dixon with Michael Andretti on IndyCar’s all-time wins list, ironic on a day when the three cars behind the No. 9 were all Andretti entries. But today was Scott Dixon’s day. The four-time Verizon IndyCar Series champion earned his first victory of the 2018 IndyCar season and made it look easy.

“Just super-proud of the team. This is awesome,” an enthusiastic Dixon said in Victory Lane. “Right now, [in] the Verizon IndyCar Series, the competition is just so tough.”
