Which top MLB prospects are knocking on the door for a trip up to the big leagues?

June is typically an in-between type of month for Major League Baseball teams. The contenders have officially separated themselves from the rest of the pack and are evaluating their roster for potential weaknesses to be addressed at the trade deadline. The have-nots are also looking at their own roster to determine which pieces might have some value on the block.

While June is not necessarily a month of big moves and trades around the league, it is a time of the year when another wave of top prospects begins making its way up to the MLB level. Teams have had enough time to evaluate their youngsters’ progress in the minor leagues and will begin making call-ups. It’s nothing like the month of September when rosters expand, but there will be a few big names making their MLB debut this month or next.

For the contending teams, making the right call on a prospect can provide another boost into the All-Star break and trade deadline. For the teams further down the standings, the addition of a top rookie can inject some life back into a stagnant season. At the very least, it gives the fans something to look forward to. These are the top names to look out for as prospects begin making their way up to the big leagues.

Arizona Diamondbacks: Jon Duplantier

After racing out to the best record in the National League, the Arizona Diamondbacks have come back down to earth and are fighting to stay above .500 with an offense struggling to score in Chase Field with its new humidors. The D’Backs are second-to-last in runs and OPS in the National League and are barely hitting above .200 as a team. All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt may be taking the biggest hit of all, and is on pace to strike out well over 200 times this year.

The Diamondbacks have managed to stay close to the top of the NL West thanks to a strong pitching staff. Without any MLB-ready prospects to come up and attempt to help the offense, the best course of action to keep the team on track for a playoff spot is to add more depth on the mound. Arizona’s top prospect, Jon Duplantier is lighting up Double-A with a four-pitch mix. The big right-hander has put elbow issues behind him and looks ready for his MLB debut as soon as this year.
