Atlanta Braves: Kolby Allard

When the Atlanta Braves began their lengthy rebuilding process, their front office focused heavily on flipping trade chips for pitching prospects and signing international hitters. It’s all coming together much sooner than expected. The Braves lead the NL East and have Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb leading the rotation, both striking out over ten per nine. Ozzie Albies has traded the NL home-run lead back and forth and looks like the most exciting leadoff man in the league. Ronald Acuna has also provided plenty of fireworks in his rookie year.

Pitchers Max Fried, Luiz Gohara and Mike Soroka have all cracked the big leagues this year with solid results. Accounting for Acuna, that makes four of the Braves top-seven prospects called up this year. Lefty Kolby Allard, currently ranked the team’s fifth-best prospect and borderline top-50 in the entire league, should be the next to debut.

Allard was drafted out of high school in 2015 and has been brought along fairly quickly. He is already in Triple-A at the age of 20 and is putting up numbers that suggest he is nearly ready for the big leagues. Allard is 4-1 this year with a 2.09 ERA in nine starts. He does not have an overwhelming fastball but commands it well with good movement. Allard works off the fastball well with his changeup and curveball.

Brandon McCarthy isn’t long for the Braves rotation with his bloated five-plus ERA. Soroka was the leading candidate to replace him, but is dealing with shoulder inflammation. Allard is next in line, and should be in the big leagues before July.
