NHL mock draft: How all-time greats fit 2018 needs
We’ve already fixed the Flyers’ goaltending carousel, so that solves their biggest issue. Their defense is in good shape with numerous young defensemen and capable guys in the minors. However, the Flyers are a bit lacking at left wing. Had Claude Giroux not switched to the position last season, it would have been even worse.
Their next best full-time left wing (Michael Raffl) put up 22 points. That’s really bad. Let’s give the Flyers one of the top goal scorers of all-time, Bobby Hull. It’s hard to gauge which version of him the Flyers would get because he spent part of his prime in the WHA.
From 1959 to 1972, Hull was named to 11 All-Star teams (nine first-teams and two second-teams). He also won three Art Ross Trophies and two Hart Trophies. Hull led the NHL in goals scored seven times. In the WHA, he was arguably the league’s brightest stars. Even though Hull left the NHL at the age of 33 (though he did make a brief 27 game return), he scored 610 goals in 1,063 games.
With Hull, suddenly, the Flyers look a lot more deadly. They would still be a team relying a bit too heavily on their top guys, but adding an all-time great goal scorer would make their top guys even better.
