NHL mock draft: How all-time greats fit 2018 needs
The Rangers have already found a franchise center and a franchise defenseman in this draft. But now they need to get a star wing. What better pick than one of the best wings of all-time who proved he could handle a huge media market — Guy Lafleur?
He helped the Montreal Canadiens win five Stanley Cups. With his amazing stickhandling, impressive creativity, and his gorgeous flow, he was a perfect fit in Montreal. Lafleur’s dashing looks and charisma would make him a darling in the Big Apple.
The Canadiens wing would be like Broadway Joe. Lafleur would be the king of New York, both on and off the ice. On the ice, he led the league in points three times (1975-76, 1976-77, 1977-78). Lafleur also won two Hart Trophies (1976-77, 1977-78) and three Pearson Awards (1975-76, 1976-77, 1977-79). He won the Conn Smythe in 1976-77.
His 560 goals rank 26th all-time. Also, Lafleur’s 793 assists rank 33rd and his 1,353 points rank 27th. The Rangers have plenty of right wings, including Mats Zuccarello, Pavel Buchnevinch, and Kevin Hayes. However, Lafleur is better than the rest of the left wings who are available. So why not draft a better right wing? Especially one who would be such a great fit with the New York Rangers?
