4. Mike Scott

Mike Scott emerged as a solid backup option at the 4 spot for the Wizards last season. He was a great signing at the veteran minimum and quickly became one of the primary reasons that the Washington bench improved from its 2016-17 dumpster fire level.   Despite starting only one game last season and playing about 19 minutes per game, Scott played an important role for the Wizards on offense.

Washington was one of the most mid-range happy teams in the NBA last year. The Wizards settled for tough looks far too often, especially given the fact that they don’t have any mid-range killers on the roster. Scott was one of the few players on the team that actually spaced the floor and gave the often cramped Washington offense some breathing room. He was probably the third best 3-point shooter on this team after Brad Beal and Otto Porter.

Scott isn’t especially sturdy on the defensive end at this point. Though he played effective defense under Coach Budenholzer in Atlanta earlier in the decade, he’s taken a step back on that end of the floor. While he’s not a great two way player, I’m not sure Washington will be able to find a better player than Scott on the cheap. He may have earned a pay raise given his nice season last year, which would mean that the Wizards might have to dip into the taxpayer MLE to re-sign him. Scott is probably worth bringing back though.
