Trading for one of these relievers could solidify the Yankees bullpen
4. Amir Garrett
Garrett would represent a much more risky acquisition for the Yankees. He was awful as a starter for the Reds in 2017. However, his move to the bullpen this season has transformed him into a very effective pitcher.
His ERA has dropped from 7.39 last season all the way down to 1.93 in 27 games this year. That jump might be too large to count on for the future, but it’s obvious his pitting repertoire is better suited for the bullpen. He’s mixing his lively fastball with a solid breaking ball to strike out over one hitter per inning.
The fact that he’s left-handed will also shoot him up in the eyes of Cashman and company. The team would love to add a dynamic southpaw to their setup options. Garrett would almost be a Chapman-lite in the earlier innings.
Unlike Stammen, Garrett’s acquisition would come with a heavy price tag. The Reds have team control on the young reliever through 2023. Even though they’re struggling mightily this season, they see him as a key piece of their future.
It might require a top-10 prospect to get Garrett into pinstripes. That price might be too much, but he’s a player Cashman should keep his eye on just in case the price is less than we expect.
