As the second season of FX’s Legion comes to a close in “Chapter 19” David Haller will need to have a reckoning with someone, maybe himself.

Last weeks episode of Legion concluded with David and Amahl Farouk seeming to face off for the first time, on what looked like the astral plane. The coming conflict could put the audience (and the other characters) in a bit of a bind. David is the one we’ve gotten to know over the past 2 seasons, and the more relatable of the two. On the other hand, what the show has been pressing, for weeks now, is that David is ultimately the one who will doom the world. So who do you want to prevail?

Ultimately, this may come down to how much you trust the time traveling elements of the show. The glimpses we’ve seen from Future-Syd don’t paint the rosiest picture, and the Future-David (aka Legion) we saw in “Chapter 18” was downright menacing. But can that future be changed?

Legion may not wear its connection to the X-Men source material on its sleeve, but it’s still there. And X-Men has definitely gone with the multiple-futures multiple-timelines thing before (several times.)  Since we know that Legion will be coming back for a third season, have the glimpses of the future we’ve gotten so far been foreshadowing?

If that’s true, David is definitely going to take his dark side a few steps further. If he does it in this episode it would set him up as the so-called big bad in season 2. But will it happen? That’s not totally clear from the synopsis released for the episode. It only reads:

"David fights the future."

So is he fighting to save the future or to change it? Actually, he could be fighting the versions of other characters that we’ve seen come back in time. We’ll just have to wait and see. “Chapter 19,” the Legion season 2 finale airs Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET.
