Miguel Cabrera out for season with biceps tear
The Detroit Tigers watched their future Hall of Fame first baseman go down for the season on Tuesday night, with Miguel Cabrera suffering a ruptured biceps.
The baseball season just lost another one of its stars on Tuesday night, with Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera leaving early due to a biceps injury. Afterwards, manager Ron Gardenhire announced that an MRI revealed Cabrera’s biceps to be ruptured, requiring season-ending surgery.
At 35 years old, Cabrera is seeing a promising campaign go down the drain. The Venezuelan was hitting .301 with three home runs and 22 RBI through 37 games, but now he’s out of action until spring training.
After performing on an MVP level every season from 2004-15, Cabrera is seeing undeniable regression. Last year, Cabrera played in 130 games but only batted .249 with 16 homers and 60 runs batted in. Cabrera hadn’t hit few dingers in a season since his rookie year, while the other two figures rank worst in his entire career.

For the Tigers, the loss is potentially devastating. Nick Castellanos and Jeimer Candelario are young stars in Detroit, but the rest of the lineup leaves something to be desired. The starting rotation is also without much punch following Matthew Boyd, who has posted a 3.20 ERA.
As for Cabrera, he is sitting on 465 home runs. Considering his contract runs through the 2023 season with mutual options for the ’24 and ’25 years, he’ll easily hit the magical 500 mark. All told, Detroit is on the hook for at least $154 million and up to $214 million with the options. It could be a very unfortunate deal for the Tigers as they try to rebuild.
