3. Danny Duffy

If you just look at Duffy’s numbers this season there’s no way the Yankees should be interested in acquiring him. However, if you look at his career numbers there’s significant cause for optimism. Cashman might be willing to take a flyer on the Royals’ lefty considering just how thin the market for starting pitching is this season.

His 5.28 ERA this season is really ugly but his career mark of just 3.87 makes it seem like a bounce back in the second half of the season is pretty likely. The Yankees would love to buy-low on Duffy before that progression begins.

A complicating factor in a deal for Duffy is that he’s being paid like an above average starting pitcher at the moment. Even worse, his deal runs through 2021. If the Yankees make an acquisition like this, they’ll need to be convinced Duffy can be a part of their rotation in the future.

There’s no question this would be a pretty sizable gamble for Cashman. The Yankees might push the Royals to take on some of the salary to make the deal a little more palatable. That concession from Kansas City, or the inclusion of a prospect should be enough to push this deal over the edge.

Duffy isn’t the most exciting pitcher on New York’s radar at the moment, but he is one of the most attainable. Brandon Drury should be enough to get the talented lefty in pinstripes.
