3. Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates started this year red hot. They led the best division in baseball behind solid pitching and an offense led by Corey Dickerson. However, now they’ve come back to Earth and are in their expected spot of fourth place in the division. So, deGrom wouldn’t be able to bring them back into the competition this year.

The Pirates would be acquiring deGrom for next year. Pairing him with Jameson Taillon and Joe Musgrove would give the Pirates a formidable rotation for the near future. An outfield made up of Starling Marte, Gregory Polanco, and eventually, Austin Meadows will be a solid foundation for the offense. Then, if they can build on their offense and bullpen in free agency they’ll be ready to compete during deGrom’s stint with the team.

This is what makes the case for the Pirates trading for deGrom so interesting. The Mets aren’t parting with him without getting top prospects back, but the Pirates need their prospects in order to execute their plan of playing for the future. If they are able to resign Corey Dickerson, that makes Austin Meadows expendable. However, the Pirates should do what it takes to keep Meadows, creating a deal centered around Shane Baz. From there, they could add Ke’Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds.

It very well could still take Austin Meadows, but with the ability to resign Dickerson, it would be worth it. deGrom is established and could support the pitching staff for a while.
