DFS Golf: PGA US Open DRAFT Rankings (DRAFT.com)
Why do you need another DFS site? Because DRAFT combines the excitement of a season-long draft into one set of games!
Welcome to the first edition of DRAFT DFS Golf rankings from FantasyCPR, covering the US Open. The DRAFT app can be downloaded to your mobile device through your app store, or you can access their desktop site here.
I play quite a bit on DRAFT, and have always been a big fan of the snake draft format. On DRAFT, for PGA, you simply roster five golfers. They offer head-to-head, 3-man, 6-man and 8-man drafts that start upon filling. In the DRAFT lobby, you will find me in the six-man and eight-man contests, which payout to the top two spots.
My goal here will be to give you my targets in tiers, based upon their DRAFT projections. Followed by that, will be my top 40 overall rankings. The strategy of course here, is that 40 golfers will be drafted for 8-man contests, and these rankings will have you covered. After having completed my rankings for this week, and having completed a few 8-man drafts, let’s talk about the course for a second before we move on to the targets.
About the Course:
Starting early Thursday, June 14th, the 118th US Open will be underway. This year’s Open will be played at the lavish Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, NY. Shinnecock Hills is a links style course, which likens it to the tougher courses across the pond. This will be the fifth US open to take place at Shinnecock Hills, with the first taking place all the way back in 1896, and the most recent in 2004. South African Retief Goosen won his second US Open title in four years, edging out Phil Mickelson in that memorable 2004 finish. Mickelson is back again, and in good enough form to make some noise here like he did 14 years ago.
The course will play at Par-70 this weekend, and measures a long 7,445 yards. The roughs will be tough, and the greens will be fast. Taking long hitters off of the tee that can keep it in the fairways, and the best putters in the game, will likely help you draft a winning team. There are only two par fives for scoring, so expect low, close scores all weekend long. Three big names in golf have won the past three US opens, in Dustin Johnson, Jordan Speith, and Brooks Koepka. This field is loaded with all of the great players, so let’s move on to some targets. After each target will be a number in parenthesis. That number represents the current DRAFT projection at the time of this article.
DFS Golf High Projected Targets: (Players with DRAFT Projections of 70-85)
Dustin Johnson – (82.0)
DJ comes into the weekend having regained control of the #1 overall player in the world ranking, after dropping an eagle on 18 last weekend to win the FedEx St. Jude Classic. He has not finished below the top 20, and now has a whopping seven top-10 finishes in his 11 tournaments. He is a clear cut #1 overall pick, and my top target.
Justin Thomas – (80.7)
JT is also in top form, and will likely be looking for some redemption, after dropping back to #2 in the World rankings following DJ’s victory last week. Thomas has five top-10 finishes in 13 tournaments this season, and two victories. He should be hungry, looking for a second major championship in his young career. JT was victorious in last year’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC. I believe he and Johnson are easily this years first and second draft picks, and both should be in line to be in it until the end.
Justin Rose – (76.3)
Another dominant player in great form, and maybe the best putter on tour right now, Rose comes in third in my rankings, and is a player who is falling a little bit down draft boards in my opinion. There are some guys I plan to fade at all costs with higher projections than Rose, which is causing me to have tons of him in my lineups. (which I am OK with!) Rose has six top-tens in 11 tournaments this year while not missing a cut, He is proven elite, and definitely worth your top draft pick.
DFS Golf Mid Projected Targets: (Players with DRAFT Projections of 60-70)
Henrik Stenson – (67.2)
Stenson has played sparingly this year, after having to withdraw from the Valspar Championship back in March due to an injury. He is 8-for-9 on making cuts, with his only MC coming in that withdrawal. He had a great stretch in late March/early April with three consecutive top-tens, including a 5th place finish at this years Masters. His form was not top level last week, as he finished 26th in the FedEx St. Jude Classic in his warm up for the US Open. All this has done has drop his projection too low, and make him a steal of a second round pick.
Webb Simpson – (67.4)
Simpson took the week off last week, after missing his first cut since February his last time out at the Fort Worth Invitational at the end of May. His last tournament before that however, Simpson was celebrating victory at The PLAYERS Championship. If you take a quick glance at his game logs, he shows a pattern of contending after a disappointing previous week. He always seems to follow up a bad weekend with a top-ten finish, so look for him to contend here.
Rafael Cabrera-Bello – (60.5)
Rafa is one of my favorite golfers on tour. Always in the hunt, and never getting much recognition. He does play quite a bit on the European Tour, and that is likely why he is an unknown to the novice golf fan. To the DFS world, he is well-known however, and is usually a good source of salary relief, depending on what site you play on. Should you play on DRAFT, you will see him available in the third round of most eight-mans and that would be a great time to grab him. He has missed just one cut this year, with most of his finishes in the twenties. Going back to late last year however, Cabrera-Bello has eight top-10 finishes
DFS Golf Low Projected Targets: (Players with DRAFT Projections of 40-60)
Tommy Fleetwood – (41.6)
For some reason, I think DRAFT is projecting Fleetwood to miss the cut here. Take advantage! Don’t wait too long though, as the sharps are scooping him up anywhere from the late second to late third rounds. Fleetwood had his best finish at a major in last years US Open, where he finished 4th. He rebounded well from a missed-cut in the Wells Fargo Championship, at THE PLAYERS Championship his last time out, where he finished tied for seventh.
Bryson DeChambeau – (56.9)
One of the young guns on tour, the 24-year-old DeChambeau comes in to Shinnecock Hills also seeking his first major championship. Other than the top picks in DJ and Rose, nobody is hotter than DeChambeau. He took the week off after his second career PGA victory at the Memorial Tournament a couple of weeks ago. He boats a remarkable five top-five finishes in his last seven starts on tour, and has missed just two cuts all year. I think he will be geared up to contend here, and he is currently a third round steal.
Alexander Noren – (58.4)
Not nearly in the form he was in early in the season when he was on fire, Noren is flying under the radar quite a bit, after missing cuts in two of his last three tournaments. His last time out on the PGA Tour was for THE PLAYERS Championship in May. He was bounced back well from two straight missed-cuts, firing a final round -6 to finish tied for 17th. He is a great candidate to make run this weekend, and can be had in the late rounds.
DFS Golf DRAFT Rankings: Top 40
My rankings are pretty easy to follow. I have ranked the top 40 overall. Following each golfer is their DRAFT fantasy point projection in parenthesis.
