5 fantasy baseball waiver wire replacements for Miguel Cabrera
4. Jake Bauers, Tampa Bay Rays
In six games since being called up to the big leagues for the first time (entering Wednesday), Bauers is hitting .273 (6-for-22) with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored. Over 222 plate appearances at Triple-A Durham this year prior to his promotion, he was hitting .279 with five home runs and 24 RBI. Over 184 total games in Triple-A over the last two seasons, Bauers has hit .268 (.416 slugging percentage, .781 OPS) with 18 home runs, 87 RBI and 45 doubles.
Bauers is technically only eligible as an outfielder in ESPN fantasy leagues right now. But he is well on track to getting first base eligibility for that league host, with six games played there, and the Rays designated Brad Miller for assignment to open the playing time door for Bauers. On the flip side, Bauers is strictly eligible at first base in Yahoo! leagues.
There’s a faint chance Bauers will see some time in one or both corner outfield spots for Tampa Bay over the course of the season, and he could then add outfield utility on Yahoo! and some other fantasy league hosts. Of course that’s dependent on him sticking around in the big leagues all season, so mixed league owners can monitor him as owners in AL-only leagues more urgently move to add him. But the Rays can give Bauers a regular spot in the lineup, and a long leash, so mixed league appeal is not out of the question.
