24. Brian Dozier

It has been a very disappointing season for the Minnesota Twins, and their hopes of going to the playoffs for a second straight year are practically zero. Last season’s resurgence from a 103-loss team to a Wild Card looks more like fool’s gold than the opening of a window of contention for a small-market team. The Twins were lauded widely for their seemingly smart moves this offseason, but none have paid off in a meaningful way.

The Twins capitalized on a very advantageous schedule last year, but have not been able to beat up on the rebuilding clubs in the AL Central this year. Up and down the lineup, hitters are disappointing, none more so than Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano. Ervin Santana has yet to pitch this year, while Lance Lynn has an ERA north of five.

Minnesota still has a great deal of talent in the minor leagues and is built to win in the future. For now, however, it looks like they got a bit over their skis last year. This is a club whose real talent level is somewhere between 100 losses and 90 wins, and that is what we are seeing this year.

This season should be nothing more than a bump in the road for the front office does need to make some forward-thinking moves at the trade deadline. All-Star second baseman Brian Dozier will be a free agent at the end of the year, and his replacement, Nick Gordon, is hitting close to .300 at Triple-A this year. Dozier’s power numbers are well short of the best years of his career, but he is still an offensive threat and Gold Glove caliber defender at second base.
