22. Asdrubal Cabrera

Nearly traded at the deadline last year because he was unhappy about his playing time and position, Asdrubal Cabrera could finally be on the move this year. The New York Mets infielder is in the final year of his three-year contract and is putting up the best power numbers of his career this year. He is hitting .283/.323/.498 on the year with 11 home runs and 36 RBI.

Moving Cabrera is an obvious choice for the Mets as they fall out of contention and begin thinking about their future. There are more difficult decisions to be made regarding the status of their starting pitchers, but this is a 32-year-old infielder in the final year of his contract. Get a middling prospect and move on.

In his three years with the Mets, Cabrera has been amazingly consistent at the plate. He has hit .281/.339/.463 with 48 home runs and 157 RBI in 337 games. Cabrera’s days as a shortstop are in the past, and his range at second base is far below the league average. That being said, he does have very good hands and won’t hurt a team with errors. Cabrera should split his time at DH and second base for a contender in the American League.

The Washington Nationals may consider another go-round with Cabrera if Daniel Murphy is unable to return to form after last offseason’s knee surgery. He has not been moving well on the bases and in the field while on his rehab assignment. Cabrera is an offensive upgrade over Wilmer Difo, the team’s current second baseman.
