NBA Free Agency 2018: 5 potential destinations for Isaiah Thomas
Isaiah Thomas is looking for the Brinks truck. Will one of these five teams be behind the wheel?
Isaiah Thomas had a strange season to say the least. Last year, Thomas declared that the Boston Celtics “got to bring the Brinks truck out.” One year later, Thomas might be willing to take a MINI cooper.
Thomas was part of the blockbuster that sent him from Boston to Cleveland in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Ready to showcase himself alongside the best player in the league, he struggled to fit in. On the court, he didn’t have the same explosiveness and finish coming off the hip injury. And his lack of size on defense stuck out even more on one of the worst defensive teams in the league. Off the court, he made waves by calling out teammate Kevin Love during a team meeting in January.
The end result saw him getting shipped to Los Angeles at the trade deadline. Thomas accepted a bench role with the Lakers and slowly started to look more like his Boston-self before his hip acted up again. Instead of playing through the injury, Thomas elected for surgery.
The 29-year-old guard played just 32 games, averaging 15.2 points and 4.8 assists. He finds himself on the outside looking in during a summer that features top talent like LeBron James, Paul George, and DeMarcus Cousins hitting the market. With his recent injury history, a long-term contract doesn’t seem likely. His best option might be to take a one-year deal to prove himself, both on the court and off.
