5. San Antonio Spurs

If you want to prove you can fit in, the Spurs are a good place to start. If a player can’t mind their manners under the watchful eye of Gregg Popovich, it’s a red flag to the rest of the league. Under normal circumstances, the Spurs may not entertain the thought of Thomas. They’ve taken personality risks in the past, but the Spurs became the Spurs because of their team-first mentality and lack of player egos.

But the Spurs foundation might be starting to crack. No one knows what’s happening with Kawhi Leonard, Tony Parker is 36 going on 60, and Dejounte Murray is still unproven. Defense wins championships, and while that continues to be true, a team still needs points to win games. Without Leonard, the Spurs offense lives and dies on LaMarcus Aldridge’s ability to hit fadeaways out of the post. Thomas represents a one-on-one scorer who, when healthy, can be a gamebreaker.

This would be a mutually beneficial decision for both parties.

Thomas goes to a team that might be able to hide him on the defensive end while letting him run wild on offense. And the Spurs offense would have a point guard who can score in all areas. If Thomas is serious about proving himself and is willing to sacrifice one year of money, he should always be on the phone with RC Bufford and Popovich.

Brinks Truck Update: Still parked, but not broken. Delayed money is still good money.
