Kansas Royals

Joey Wentz, SP

The Royals are no longer title contenders. They sit far back in their division and have realized that they are not the same team that made long playoff run sin 2014 and 2015. They know that, and they are starting to look at trading the key pieces from those runs. So, they won’t be trying to bring in major league players this year.

Right now, the farm system of the Royals is hitting heavy so they’ll probably want to add some young pitchers. Earlier, we mentioned Mike Moustakas being the ideal trade target for the Braves. Well, the Braves have a lot of young pitching talent so that sets up a potential trade nicely.

The Braves will probably try to hold onto their highest picks, but Joey Wentz is a talented pitcher who is a reasonable haul for the Royals in a trade for Moustakas. So far in high-A ball, his only real problem is control. He’s walking nearly 6 batters every 9 innings. While walk percentage is a significant stat for projecting pitcher success, it is something that the Royals can work on.

Last year in A ball, he only walked 3 batters per 9 innings so he has the ability not to. More work on just throwing strikes can help him get back on the right track. Even Max Scherzer had a year in AA where he walked 5 batters every 9 innings. It can be turned around and the Royals should take the chance that they’re the ones who can make it happen.
