New York Mets

Kelvin Herrera, RP

The Mets started the year 12-2 and in their last 14 games they’ve gone 3-11 putting them 3 games below .500. They’re fading back from the Braves and Nationals in the division and need to turn things around soon if they want to get back on track. If they don’t do anything, they might as well trade Jacob DeGrom because they’re wasting him.

It would be easy to say that the Mets have no offense, they need to add offense. They’ve scored the fourth fewest runs in baseball, but that is how this team was built. They were built to win games 3-1 and also lose games 0-2. Getting back a healthy Yoenis Cespedes will be key for this offense which has shown signs of life. The bullpen however, has been miserable. The Mets had a stretch of 8 games where the bullpen blew 5 saves. Adding offense like Jose Abreu won’t do anything if the bullpen can’t hold the lead anyways.

Despite a need for a left-handed reliever not named Jerry Blevins, Kelvin Herrera makes much more sense for the Mets than Zach Britton. The Mets are not in a position to take a chance on Britton not returning to his 2016 form. They need someone who will simply come in and put batters away. That somebody is Kelvin Herrera.

Despite not striking out every batter he sees, Herrera has been one of the 10 best relievers thus far this season. Adding him to their bullpen will eliminate the need for Paul Sewald, Seth Lugo, and Robert Gsellman to go multiple innings and make themselves unavailable the next day. Hopefully, he will remove any questions about Mickey Callaway’s bullpen usage. Kelvin Herrera is the savior the Mets bullpen needs.
