New York Yankees

Francisco Liriano, SP

The Yankees do not need more hitting. They have the second most runs scored in baseball, right behind the division leading Red Sox. However, they only have the 12th best ERA in baseball, and this is where they can improve. More specifically, they could use the help with their starters.

Outside of Luis Severino, the Yankees starters are question marks. Francisco Liriano on the other hand, is not. He’s been brilliant this year, never surrendering more than 5 runs in a start, and giving up 3 or less runs in 8 of his 10 starts. He’s got a solid 3.90 ERA on the season and will help the Yankees to get some consistency out of their starting pitching staff.

His $4 million dollar deal for this year is ideal for the Yankees too. The Yankees, who are long known for paying big money for free agents, are trying to maintain a lower payroll. So, Liriano comes to them on the cheap for this year, and then they won’t have to continue to pay him next year. 6 of the Yankees top 8 prospects are pitchers. Two of these 6, Justus Sheffield and Chance Adams, are in AAA and pay be able to start games in the MLB next year. Then, there won’t be a need for Liriano. He can simply join the team and continue to be steady force.

Liriano is the choice the Yankees should make if they don’t want to pay Cole Hamels, or pay for Michael Fulmer/Chris Archer.
