San Francisco Giants

Trevor Cahill, SP

The Giants made some questionable decisions this offseason when acquiring Andrew McCutchen and Evan Longoria. They seem set on going for it and trying to get a Wild Card spot or win their division, the latter of which feels more tangible right now. They just swept the Phillies and are ready to keep pushing towards the playoffs.

Outside of Dereck Rodriguez, who has only made one start, every Giants starter has an ERA at or above 4.50. Having that type of starting pitching production and the 22nd best ERA in baseball isn’t going to get them to the playoffs. So, they need to try and get Oakland to give up Trevor Cahill. They can sell them on the fact that Kendall Graveman will be the Trevor Cahill of the future for the A’s. They will need to send an MLB starter to hold a spot in the A’s rotation as well as a prospect but it will be worth it for Cahill.

So far this year, Cahill has been terrific. He has a 2.77 ERA and and .986 WHIP as he looks to have regained his 2016 form. In 2016, he helped the Cubs win the World Series, something the Giants would hope he could do for them. He’s been getting better horizontal movement from his curveball and slider, which if continued could help him maintain the success he has had this year.

The Giants have no problem bringing in veterans to help them win. They should go get one more so they can improve their pitching staff and go back to the playoffs. Maybe they’ve still got some even year magic left.
