Cincinnati Reds

Dan Straily, SP

The Reds are in sell mode, looking to build to the future of their organization. They just have one problem. They currently have the worst starting pitching in the National League, surrendering a wOBA of .362. It isn’t close, as the Padres are the next worse at .342. However, only 3 of their top 10 prospects are pitchers, 2 of whom are a ways away in A ball.

Taking a chance on a reunion with Dan Straily could be their solution. He is arbitration eligible for two years after this year and has shown his potential this year. He’s pitching to a sub-3.75 ERA despite having control issues. He’s walking 5.5 batters per 9 innings which will have to change if he wants to stay in the MLB.

Straily should be a worthy gamble for the Reds who are trying to add cost controlled assets to their roster. Matt Harvey has seen his ERA, WHIP, and strikeout to walk ratio all improve since joining the Reds. If they are able to replicate their work with Straily it could complete the resurrection of his career.

Bringing in Straily is a good move for the Reds if they are thinking in the long-term. He’ll be a low risk player who can contribute for the next few years, there is no reason not to acquire him.
