Myles Garrett blasts Kevin Durant for winning
Kevin Durant has taken heat since joining the Golden State Warriors. Now Cleveland Browns edge rusher Myles Garrett decided to join the chorus of critics.
During a radio interview with 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland earlier today, Myles Garrett didn’t bother to mince words as he talked about Durant and the Warriors’ four-game sweep of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.
He wasn’t on the show to talk basketball but when the question of whether or not he’d watched the Finals was casually lobbed to him, Garrett took a swing and gave hosts Ken Carman and Anthony Lima quite a bit more than they were expecting.
After taking a second to collect his words, he let out a sigh of frustration, then offered and a simple response: “KD broke the league.”
And then the floodgates opened.
“With KD, you just stick him in and he scores,” Garrett said. “You already knew what they had. They were 73-9 before and you put the second-best player in the world on an already all-time great team and of course you’re going to have success, pretty easy success. Anyone can have an off night and they can still find a way to win.”
He’s just hitting his stride.
”If I were him I would’ve never made a move like that in the first place,” Garrett said. “Me, I’m too competitive to try and ride on somebody’s coat tails to get a W. But for him, you might as well stay at the spot you’re at now. There’s no point in leaving since you’ve already taken that moniker where he’s been called the snake and cupcake and all that. You might as well stay and just keep on winning.”
I admittedly don’t spend a lot of time listening to Cleveland sports talk this time of year, or any other for that matter. But I’d be willing to bet that this was the most interesting discussion related to the Browns since either the literal dumpster fire in 2017 or the metaphorical dumpster in 2014-2015 (the Johnny Football era).
Obviously it’s more than a little ridiculous to for a player who is 0-16 in his career to be taking shots at a guy with more championships and more Finals MVP’s in the last two seasons than your team has wins. I’m also not sure if Garrett really gets the phrase “ride on someone’s coattails” since again, KD has a pair of Finals MVP trophies. I’m even less sure about how one could be “too competitive” to join a championship team and would rather play on a winless team.
Aside from those minor details, the more I think about it, the more I respect and appreciate Garrett here.
First off, I agree with a lot of what he had to say. Even if I didn’t, who cares? It’s not like this can come back to haunt his team. The Browns don’t have to play the Warriors, and if they did, A- they’d probably win and B- what’s the worst that could happen? They lose? They lost 16 times last season and 15 the season before. That’s called the status quo in Cleveland.
If there was anyway this could possibly backfire, the worst-case scenario would be a lateral move. And Garrett’s played part of one season in the NFL. He doesn’t care. He reminds me of Nick Papagiorgio from Yuma throwing dice, riding a heater at the craps table and winning cars every time he walks by a slot machine. He has absolutely nothing to lose so letting it ride.

Why bother coming up with a bull**it platitude to avoid giving a real answer. The NBA Finals sucked. The purgatory between the NBA playoffs and football started a week sooner than it could have because Durant had to take the path of least resistance to win an NBA title. Garrett isn’t even speaking as part of the Browns organization, he’s speaking for every man.
