Los Angeles Rams: 5 players who must improve in 2018
2. Mark Barron
Barron was a productive player last year, with 86 total tackles and three interceptions in 14 games. But he battled multiple injuries (knee, thumb, Achilles), culminating in offseason shoulder surgery and sitting out OTAs in May as he recovered from “a couple things” (as described by McVay). His fit in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defensive scheme, as a safety originally by trade and the requisite body type (225 pounds), but Barron will be counted on big this year.
Alex Ogletree was traded to the New York Giants this offseason, as the Rams try to do something to change things up and improve their run defense. Former undrafted free agent Cory Littleton looks like the front runner to replace Ogletree, as he worked as a starter and defensive signal caller during OTAs.
Barron took on his doubters earlier this month, citing Pro Football Focus data from 2017 reflecting his almost unrivaled prowess as a run defender among linebackers.

Having a big body like Suh playing nose tackle will command consistent double teams, and thus keep interior offensive lineman off the second level of the Rams’ defense. That will directly benefit Barron, and he’s now the most proven commodity the team has at inside linebacker.
