Costa Rica vs. Serbia live stream: Watch World Cup online
By Zach Bigalke
Costa Rica and Serbia begin their World Cup Group E campaigns in Russia with a duel in Samara on June 17. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
Just a few weeks after patrolling the net for Real Madrid in a third straight Champions League final, Keylor Navas will be back on the pitch hoping to take Costa Rica deep in the 2018 World Cup. The Central American side won Group D over Uruguay, Italy and England and then advanced to the quarterfinals in 2014. Only a penalty shootout loss against the Netherlands kept Costa Rica out of a semifinal date against Argentina in Brazil.
With Navas offering reassurance at the back, Costa Rica will have the freedom to press forward. They will need to get the ball forward to players like Saprissa winger Christian Bolanos and LAFC striker Marco Urena as often as possible.
Serbia missed out on the World Cup four years ago, so this is just the second tournament competing as Serbia. They have failed to maintain the legacy of Yugoslavia at the World Cup, but Serbia still have enough weapons to contend for a spot in the knockout stage out of Group E.
It will be critical to snatch points out of the gate against Costa Rica. Serbia will rely on the scoring of Aleksandar Mitrovic, who potted six goals in UEFA qualifying. Defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic will serve as the fulcrum between defense and the attack.
Both teams will be desperate for points, so this should be a wide-open affair. Don’t sleep in too late on the first weekend of the tournament, as this showdown will make for an especially fun accompaniment to Sunday breakfast or brunch.

Costa Rica will be desperate to show that their 2014 run was no fluke. Navas will be desperate to put on another impressive display for the national team after continuing to deal with skepticism at Real Madrid. Serbia must mature quickly on the front end to give Mitrovic, himself just 23 years old, more support on the score sheet.
Costa Rica kept three of their four European opponents scoreless at the 2014 World Cup. In Russia, Costa Rica will continue their run of success against UEFA opponents in the tournament. Look for Navas to post another clean sheet in World Cup play as the CONCACAF runner-up secures all three points for themselves.
