Fantasy Baseball 2018: Dylan Covey is a must-add pitcher
By Bill Pivetz
While the White Sox team is struggling, they have some fantasy stars. Pitcher Dylan Covey is one of them and should be on your team.
The Chicago White Sox are in a bit of a tough spot, like a few other teams. They are not competing in their division and may be forced to sell off their top assets by the trade deadline. But, for fantasy owners, those players can still provide for your team. One of those players for the White Sox is starting pitcher Dylan Covey.
If you need help with starting pitching or just want to add him to your already-stacked rotation in preparation for the playoffs, then he is a must-add pitcher.
Covey made his first start on April 28 in a losing effort. He pitched six innings and allowed four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three. Since then, however, Covey’s been on a tear. He’s been a top-30 starting pitcher over the last 30 days based on ESPN’s Player Rater.

In his last five starts, he’s pitched to a 1.53 ERA, 1.227 WHIP, 30 strikeouts and eight walks with a 3-0 record. Covey’s been able to perform at this level against some of the league’s top teams, Milwaukee, Boston and Cleveland.
Though, his start against the Indians looked a little rough. He allowed 10 hits over seven innings. Covey was able to limit the damage as all 10 hits were singles and he gave up two runs.
As of this writing, Covey is in the middle of his next start against the Indians again in Cleveland. His next start will be at home against the Oakland Athletics. The A’s are hitting .249 this month, 11th in the league, but have 128 strikeouts.
Covey doesn’t give up many hits that get off the ground. His batted ball profile is 15.2 LD/61.0 GB/23.8 FB rates. Only one of those fly balls have turned into home runs. Yes, Covey did not allow a single home run until Yolmer Sanchez got him last night. Granted, that is likely to change, but if he didn’t give up any against the Red Sox, Brewers or Indians, then he shouldn’t give up many more.
Despite his recent success, fantasy owners don’t want to own him. He’s owned in just 21.5 percent of ESPN leagues, added in 4,600 Yahoo! leagues (they don’t give percentages) and in 65 percent of CBS Sports leagues. Maybe it’s the number of total leagues that affect the percentages, but those numbers still seem pretty low.

Covey has a winnable matchup in his next start. If he’s not already owned by then, you need to add him. He has a good batted ball profile and low ratio stats. The only negative is the low probability of wins considering the offense around him.
