MLB Power Rankings: Astros look unstoppable, Dodgers roar back to life
20. San Diego Padres
The Padres looked like the might get things going early in the week, but finished last week just 3-4. They’ve been very close all year to being an above average team, however a weak offense has held them back all year. There has been enough shown this year to make excited for next year and the impending arrival of Fernando Tatis Jr.
19. Pittsburgh Pirates
Last week, the Pirates had a .500 record in their attempt to get back into the Wild Card race. However, weeks where they are an average team is not going to get the job done. Right now, they are right where they were expected to be coming into the year, a slightly below average team, competing in a tough division.
18. Toronto Blue Jays
The Blue Jays have been outstanding as of late. They’re 7-3 during their last 10 games and seem to have been the team that they were expected to be coming into the year. It is probably too little, too late but it has been nice to see that they have it in them. They should capitalize on the increased value of their expiring contracts, sending them to contenders for more prospects.
17. San Francisco Giants
The Giants looked like they would be right in the thick of it in their division. Then, the Giants dropped 3 out of 4 to the Marlins and followed it up by losing 2 out of 3 to the Dodgers. It looks like last week will have ended any aspirations the Giants had of going to the playoffs.
16. Detroit Tigers
The Tigers have performed surprisingly well. Most expected them to be a bottom-dweller this year. Yet, here they are having gone 7-3 in their last 10 games, beating up on their division rivals. Despite being below .500 and losing Miguel Cabrera for the year, they still have a chance of winning their division.
