Kevin Knox was welcomed to the New York Knicks in the only way fans know how to receive draft picks.

Memo to kids hoping to one day walk across the stage as NBA draft picks: If the Knicks boo you, don’t take it to heart. Knicks fans are a curmudgeon bunch, understandably so, what with the habitual bad luck and constant losing.

The Knicks picked ninth in Thursday’s NBA Draft and picked the wrong guy. Well, at least if you ask fans what they thought. With Mikal Bridges still on the board — a guy many thought New York should draft — the Knicks selected Kentucky forward Kevin Knox.

In true fashion, fans booed.

Knicks fanatic and Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee got behind the pick, even if he was initially hesitant.

On the one hand, it’s a bummer that this kid’s big moment was spoiled by cranky fans booing a guy who has played zero NBA minutes. Kristaps Porzingis was booed, and he’s now the prodigal son of Big Apple basketball.

Chances are if you get booed your career will turn out fine.

That’s the way it works with Knicks fans, who are the Jets fans of the NBA. No matter who they draft, it’s always the wrong guy. We’re at a point where it’s weird if Knicks fans don’t boo a draft pick.

They’re a scarred bunch, Knicks fans are. I sit across from one at work and there isn’t a day that goes by where I’m not sucked into the Renaldo Balkman or Mardy Collins wormhole.

That’s where the boos are coming from. While it seems a bad look, the boos from Knicks fans are actually crying for help that Kevin Knox will save them.
