Brazil beat Costa Rica 2-0 in the World Cup on Friday, June 22. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Brazil scored two late goals to overcome a stubborn Costa Rica side and take a big step toward the round of 16. Their draw with Switzerland in the first match, however, means they still have work to do if they’re to top the group.
The match seemed for a long time like it might end in frustration for the selecao. They dominated possession and peppered Keylor Navas’ goal with shots, but didn’t get the opener until second half stoppage time, Philippe Coutinho poking in Roberto Firmino’s knockdown.
The goal came a little under 15 minutes after the most controversial moment of the match. Neymar was awarded a penalty that was later taken away after a VAR review. The replays showed clearly it was a dive. Another good moment for VAR at this World Cup.
A day after Argentina’s humiliation at the hands of Croatia, it felt like Brazil may too find themselves in a precarious situation heading into the final group match, only for Coutinho to save them at the end.
There was time for a second in the 97th minute, Neymar finally getting on the score sheet after going close several times earlier in the game. The relief was palpable, and Brazil’s talisman broke down in tears at the final whistle.
