Boston Bruins – C

No First Round Pick

The Bruins acquired Rick Nash with this draft pick. Boston was trying to add more of a scoring punch for the playoffs. Nash had five points in 12 games, but the entire Boston team disappeared in the second round. I can’t fault Boston too much for this trade.

Other Notable Picks: Axel Andersson (D) (57), Jakub Lauko (C) (77)

Andersson wasn’t as highly touted as the other Swedish defensemen in the draft. You have to assume that not every Swedish defender taken in this draft will be the next Victor Hedman or Erik Karlsson. Based on that theory, Andersson might be a bit of a reach here. He has offensive upside, but lacks in the defensive department. A good skater with good puck skills. I really like the pick of Jakub Lauko, especially at No. 77. Lauko was thought to be a second-round talent and the Bruins were able to get him in the third. He didn’t light it up offensively in the last year, but he has top-end speed and works hard on every shift. The other Bruins draft picks fell in line with what you would expect given their draft position. No value at first glance, but no reaches either.

With no first-round pick, the Bruins were always behind in this draft. Lauko is a nice addition from the third round, but there’s not much else to write home about. If the Bruins retain Nash on a team-friendly deal, their numbered grade improves a bit, but the letter remains the same.
