Twists and turns await the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers at Sonoma, and we tell you how to watch them tackle the winding road course live.
Everyone who makes fun of NASCAR drivers for only making left turns will have to eat their words on Sunday. The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series makes its annual stop at Sonoma Raceway for the first road course race of the season at the Toyota/Save Mart 350.
Kyle Larson will start from the pole for the second straight year, though he’ll be trying to improve on a less than stellar record in his home state road course race. In four starts at the track, he’s never even managed one top 10 finish, and his 2017 pole award turned into only a 26th-place afternoon.
Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, this season’s two hottest drivers, have won at Sonoma in the past, and both will be in good shape to chase another victory in wine country with top-10 starting spots. Jimmie Johnson will enjoy one of his better qualifying runs this year as he rolls off seventh, and AJ Allmendinger, who has shown that he is a road course expert in the past (though his finishes have been better at Watkins Glen than Sonoma) will start fifth.
Road racing acumen will be more important than ever this season thanks to the addition of a third road course race at Charlotte Motor Speedway this fall on what’s affectionately been nicknamed the Roval. That race is part of the 2018 NASCAR Playoffs, so getting confidence at Sonoma could potentially be a big feather in the cap of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 winner.
