NBA Free Agency 2018: 5 offseason targets for the Boston Celtics
By Kareem Gantt
5. Channing Frye
OK, before you get out the pitchforks, let me explain why Frye would be a nice fit in Beantown.
Frye is the very definition of a “stretch big,” a centerwho stands out and shoots 3s and gets the occasional rebound. He was one of the pillars of the last great Phoenix Suns team, which led to the Orlando Magic paying him big money to shoot 3s.
After spending recent seasons riding the pine for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers, Frye is itching to be a contributor to a great team, Boston should entertain his request.
The Celtics need shooters on their bench who can stretch the floor on a consistent basis. Frye is a career 38 percent shooter from deep, and he’ll keep defenses stretched out while he’s on the floor.
Another attraction that Frye has is he will be an inexpensive pickup. The Celtics need 3-point shooters off the bench, and they don’t have to head to Macy’s to find one. There are plenty of good ones right at the Goodwill, and Frye is one of them.
