Manny Machado is going to be linked to the Los Angeles Dodgers, whether we like it or not.

It’s not the MLB trade deadline without some blockbuster deal being rumored. For Manny Machado, he’s been involved in just about every possible blockbuster imaginable, from getting dealt to the Chicago Cubs to an unlikely deal within the division to the New York Yankees.

One rumor that has popped back up would be a deal that sends Machado to the opposite coast and Los Angeles. There’s nothing concrete, as has been the case with these rumors, but the seed hasn’t spoiled yet. It hasn’t blossomed, either, but as we enter the final stretch of trade season, Machado’s name being connected to the resurgent Dodgers is notable.

According to both FRSBaseball.com’s Jon Heyman and the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo, the Dodgers are going to continue to monitor the trade market on Machado until something happens. This should go without saying, as it would be weird if a big market team like Los Angeles wasn’t mentioned in rumors for a big money star like Machado.

Rumblings have been heard before — credible or otherwise — about a potential Machado-to-Los Angeles trade. What’s noteworthy here, or worth keeping an eye on, is the fact that the Dodgers have gone from seemingly out of the running to less than three-games out of first place. Clayton Kershaw is on the mend, the N.L. West is topsy-turvy, and Los Angeles is all of a sudden back in a position to overtake first place.

That’s the perfect concoction with which to reignite the Machado trade rumors. It’s why they’re not going to go anywhere anytime soon. Los Angeles is close enough to turning its season around that folks are going to talk themselves into this trade.

None of this is to say a deal is close or that one will happen. But as we enter July and the final days of the rumor mill churning this year, Machado’s name is going to come up a lot. As long as the Dodgers keep their heads above water, their name won’t be far removed.
