So far, this year’s Cy Young Award is anyone’s game

3. Jacob deGrom, RHP for the New York Mets

5-3, 1.69 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, 31.4 strikeout rate, 101.1 IP and 3.8 WAR

You could make a very fair and compelling argument that deGrom should be the National League Cy Young right now. I don’t buy into that argument, but it can be made. One of the few measures he trails Max Scherzer is strikeout rate but since that margin is so large and speaks to the dominance that is Max Scherzer, deGrom falls just a hair behind. He’s the clear number two option in the N.L. right now and it’s really a shame that the Mets offense has been so putrid when he pitches. Even a start in Coors Field against the Colorado Rockies hasn’t derailed the season for deGrom, as he went eight innings and only gave up one run. The righty for the Mets has the best ERA in baseball and that’s no accident.

Just look at how long that pitch looks the exact same until the slider breaks away from Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig at the last possible moment. It’s no wonder deGrom has been so good this year and he’s seen 13 starts end in under three or fewer earned runs surrendered.  He’s been so good that he is in fact the subject of some trade scuttlebutt. It’s a little hard to envision the Mets getting enough in return to deal one of the best pitchers in the game currently. However, deGrom is 30 years old and the Mets aren’t going anywhere. It could kick start a rebuild and deGrom can be an ace no matter what uniform he’s wearing.
