Kansas City Chiefs: 5 burning questions in 2018
By Tre LyDay
1. How good is Patrick Mahomes?
Perhaps the most white hot burning question for this team is the most obvious one. Just how good is Patrick Mahomes, and should we really be buying into the hype? If you don’t want to buy into the hype that’s totally fine because the hype surrounding Mahomes is pretty big.
At the same time he was the first quarterback drafted in the first round by the Chiefs to actually win a game so he’s already entered Chiefs lore in one way. Week 17 in Denver was his audition, and it’s probably what gave Andy Reid and the Chiefs the confidence to let Alex Smith go this offseason.
All reports coming out of Chiefs camp have been encouraging. Obviously there are going to be growing pains with Mahomes, but it sounds like he’s been working through those growing pains sooner rather than later.
This sort of ties into the question about Watkins. Mahomes is in his first full season as Chiefs quarterback, and this is his first full offseason with his offensive teammates. His week 17 game was played with almost exclusively backups so he’s never thrown to Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins in an actual game. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of chemistry these guys have when the games count.
Next: Can the Giants continue the NFC East playoff trend?
Mahomes has been put in a situation that almost foolproof, and the general consensus is that there’s no way he can fall flat on his face. There are high expectations not only for Mahomes but for the team as well, and we’ll see how he does in his first full season.
These questions aren’t going to get answered overnight. It will be a process, but this team looks the part, and are gunning for not only a third straight division title but a Super Bowl victory as well.
