NBA Free Agency 2018: 5 best shooting guards available
2. J.J. Redick
Redick is far more fun to talk about offensively, so let’s get his defense out of the way. Often times on defense, Redick is asked to defend bigger players, and with guards getting bigger that trend is likely to continue. However, that doesn’t mean he’s a bad defender. In fact, he’s a very good defender because he can stay with anybody trying to escape him. It allowed him to put up a defensive rating of 102 last year, and one as low as 99 in 2015-2016.
Speaking of 2015-2016, Redick shot 47.5 percent from three point range that year. That outstanding mark is just part of the impressive shooting resume he has put together as of late. The last 4 years, he has shot above 40 percent from three point range all because he knows his rule. Redick doesn’t try to do too much.
He uses the very skills that let him stay with people on defense, to try and get free on offense. Watching him move without the ball is crazy, he never stops trying to get open. So, he’s had 5 straight seasons in which more than 90 percent of his three pointers have come from assists. He does a lot of this movement on the perimeter so that is where his shots come from. In fact, just 18.1 percent of his shots come from within 16 feet. So yeah, he is just shooting three pointers and long twos.
He was in the 91st percentile on spot up shots and will continue to do that next year. Redick is probably the best shooter available in free agency this year. With analytics falling in love with the three point shot, he’s going to be a valued commodity.
