New York Jets: 5 burning questions in 2018
2. The quarterback situation as a whole
The Jets quarterback room is quite the battle. Uncle Josh will be starting the season with the job, while Teddy Bridgewater fighting him for the starting gig come opening day. All the while, Sam Darnold lurks in the wings, absorbing their knowledge, and getting ready for his chance to show that he is the future of this franchise.
There are so many different ways that this could pan out. Teddy Bridgewater could be cut and the Jets would have had to pay him close to nothing. Bridgewater could also beat Josh McCown out and start the first game of the season. Or, Darnold who has looked great so far could win the job going away. However, should Darnold not win the job, when does he start?
If McCown/Bridgewater are winning game, he might not see the field this year. Would Darnold come in after the first poor game from the starter or is there a set game that is being targeted?
There really is no saying what is going to happen. Well, actually there is one thing that we know for sure. The New York fans will be calling for Darnold as soon as it seems remotely reasonable to do so. It seems unlikely that the Jets will cave to the public pressure. After years of butchering the careers of highly drafted quarterbacks, they cannot afford to mess this one up.
The best guess is that we see all three on the roster when the season starts with McCown or Bridgewater starting, then Darnold will become the starter when ready, probably around Week 8. From there, the Jets will look to trade Bridgewater to a team in need of a quarterback if there are any good reports out about Bridgewater. Only time will be able to tell.
