If the Mets want to rebuild the right way, here’s the perfect blueprint

2019 New York Mets starting lineup

This is where I would start if I was the Mets. It would hurt to see deGrom go, but we could see a potentially young lineup in 2019:

Lineup:

  1. Brandon Nimmo (CF)
  2. Brendan Rodgers (2B)
  3. Yoenis Cespedes (LF)
  4. Michael Conforto (RF)
  5. Peter Alonso (1B)
  6. Todd Frazier (3B)
  7. Will Smith (C)
  8. Amed Rosario (SS)
  9. Pitcher Spot

Rotation:

  1. Noah Syndergaard
  2. Steven Matz
  3. Peter Almonte
  4. Zack Wheeler
  5. Seth Lugo

Bullpen:

Robert Gsellman

Yency Almonte

Aaron Civale

Anthony Swarzak

Justin Dunn

Corey Oswalt

Jamie Callahan

This doesn’t even include free agency. All the guys listed above are either in the Mets system or acquired in a trade listed above. I can tell you one thing, it’s a much younger roster. If you’re going to lose 90 games, which the Mets are on pace to do, do it with youth.

This 2019 Mets lineup is deeper, filled with younger talent as opposed to aging veterans, and it looks like a team that doesn’t rely as much on pitching. I think the lineup is the strongest point here and the starting staff and bullpen could use the help of free agency.

Next: Will Manny Machado make more than Bryce Harper?

Regardless, a rebuild is necessary. They’ll dwindle in mediocre for the rest of deGrom’s Mets career if they do nothing. They should be proactive in correcting their issues on the diamond, and hopefully the front office as well.
