DraftKings Main MLB Picks June 28: McCullers or Nola?

There are ten games on our Thursday, which makes it a pretty busy day. Until it’s not. The Marlins and Diamondbacks are teeing it up early in Florida, which leaves them available only in showdown and the all day mode. Five more games make up the afternoon slate. That leaves only four for the evening slate, and the pitching is sketchy at best in this one. Who will hurt us the least? Let’s check it out!

There are some showers possible in Boston early, but my feeling is that this game plays after a bit of a delay. The wind is also blowing out to left, and it is very humid in Boston. We could see a lot of offense in this one!

We will provide you with several options to build your lineup here. Want to spend all your money on pitchers and play bargain bats? We will highlight who is worth the money. Want to punt arms and pay up for the big boppers? We can help you with that as well, and everything in between!

These tips are based mostly on past performance. This is a nice tool for building a lineup, but should not be the only pieces of information you use. We have plenty of writers on here who give you relevant information no matter which site you play on!

WASHINGTON, DC – JUNE 23 : Starting pitcher Aaron Nola #27 of the Philadelphia Phillies throws to a Washington Nationals batter in the fifth inning at Nationals Park on June 23, 2018 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images) /

Top Tier:

Aaron Nola ($12,100): Nola picked up a solid 19.3 DraftKings points against the Nationals earlier this year. Nola has also been dominant at home this year. In seven home starts, Nola is 6-0 with a 1.86 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and 55 strikeouts in 48.1 innings. The stars are aligning for a dominant start out of Nola here. He is likely the best pitcher of the entire day if you are playing the all day slate.

Lance McCullers Jr. ($11,100): You could also make an argument for McCullers being the best pitcher on the day, and I couldn’t really disagree. The Rays are just 2-24 against McCullers (.083) with one run and ten strikeouts. That’s domination. That is worth paying for.

Middle Tier:

Junior Guerra ($8,200): This is a tough one. Guerra put up a strong 23.8 DraftKings points against the Reds in Milwaukee earlier this year, but therein lies the problem. Guerra has strong numbers throughout his career, but not in Cincinnati. Guerrra has a 6.75 ERA in three career starts there. The only reason that Guerra is here is because of the strikeout potential. His metrics have never really been great, but he keeps finding ways to maintain that 2.82 ERA.

Tanner Roark ($7,100): Roark got thumped by the Phillies in his last start in D.C., but the thing that has me interested here is the fact that Roark put up 20.9 DraftKings points against the Phils in Philly earlier this season. This is a short slate that is even shorter on pitching. Taken in context, Roark is a very good flier at this price.

Bargain Pitchers:

Anthony DeSclafani ($6,400): DeSclafani is still working back into form, but he has been solid in his last three starts after a rocky start to 2018 against the Rockies. DeSclafani has only allowed seven runs (six earned) in his last three starts. The current Brewers are a solid 7-28 against him, but they only have two runs. The five strikeouts leave a lot to be desired, but DeSclafani has never been a big strikeout guy. That leaves him as a risky play, but he is about the only guy under $7,000 that I would even think about.

OAKLAND, CA – JUNE 15: Ian Kinsler #3 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is congratulated by Mike Trout #27 after Kinsler hit a solo home run against the Oakland Athletics in the top of the fourth inning at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum on June 15, 2018 in Oakland, California. Top Tier:

Jaime Barria has had a nice rookie season, but I think he hits a bump here. The recipe is there for a high scoring game. I’m all over Mookie and J.D. once again. Bogaerts, Benintendi, and Mitch Moreland are just a notch below, but your pitching is going to be awful if you cram all those bats in. Jackie Bradley is a decent option if you need to go cheaper, and I also like Rafael Devers as a substitute for any of the above.

Brian Johnson pitched very well against the Angels in his only appearance against them, but this is not the place to take a chance on him. Mike Trout and Justin Upton are very strong plays here, and with the way Kole Calhoun is hitting, I wouldn’t count him out even against a lefty.

Christian Yelich, Eric Thames, and Travis Shaw are all worth a look if you think DeSclafani is going to go off the rails. I want a little exposure to this even though I think DeSclafani has a solid game here.

Since Ryan Yarbrough is going to pitch a bulk of the innings, I’m loading up on Houston righties. Springer, Altuve, and Correa are tops on my wish list, but don’t forget to save money with guys like Marisnick and Yuli Gurriel. Both could be equally productive here.

Middle Tier:

Cesar Hernandez has scored eight runs in 31 at bats against Tanner Roark. Alfaro, Rhys Hoskins, and Odubel Herrera have the homers off of Roark. The Phillies prices are all inflated due to the fact that they destroyed Roark last week, which makes this stack almost as expensive as Boston. My guess is that it will be less lucrative.

You can save a bit on some Nationals here like Daniel Murphy. Murphy is 9-23(.391) with a homer and five RBI off of Aaron Nola. Michael Taylor and Rendon have also homered off of Nola before. Bryce Harper has two homers and five RBI against Nola, but I doubt he breaks out of his slump against a pitcher like this on the road.

Bargain Shoppers:

It’s hard not to be excited about the power potential of Adam Duvall for this cheap. Duvall also has two homers in 12 at bats against Guerra. Eugenio Suarez, Votto, and Billy Hamilton have also taken Guerra deep.
