Reports of Lonzo Ball “tearing” his “meniscus” on the same day that LeBron James “opted out” have people second-guessing themselves. “Laser.”

A year ago, we saw LaVar Ball’s dream of having his eldest son Lonzo play for the Los Angeles Lakers come to fruition. A year later, his future with the team is in jeopardy.

With Kawhi Leonard’s name swirling around in trade rumors, the Lakers are the team that have popped up most frequently as a destination. Armchair GMs have speculated that the likes of Kyle Kuzma or Lonzo Ball could go the other way.

Then, of course, there’s LeBron James. Many believe he’ll leave Cleveland for real this time. With LA being the most talked about destination, because of his home in Brentwood, his Hollywood aspirations and his son possibly going to high school there, the stars seem to be aligning for Magic Johnson, Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka. But if this vision of theirs doesn’t include Lonzo, then Big Baller Brand will have something to say about that.

That’s why the latest report that Ball has torn his meniscus has been met with skepticism moreso than genuine concern. NBA Twitter is almost certain that the BBB camp leaked this information to the public to keep Ball out of trade talks:

Given what we’ve seen from LaVar up to this point, it wouldn’t be a surprise. But contrary to what 2K might have you believe, injured players can get traded. It’s just a matter of would a team like the Spurs want someone who’s injury prone, or the circus that comes with having a Ball family member.

While you can always count on NBA Twitter to get jokes off, a torn meniscus is no laughing matter. From the looks of it, he’ll still be ready to go for training camp and the start of the season. But no matter what team he plays for next season, hopefully this injury won’t seriously impact his game.
