LeBron James opts out of his player option in favor of becoming a free agent.

It’s been the talk of the town for months, but the day is finally upon us. LeBron James had $35.6 million waiting for him in Cleveland next season, but has officially opted out. James becomes an unrestricted free agent and is now free to test the market and sign with whichever team he wants. Let the LeBron sweepstakes begin. Every team will be interested, but few are actually in the running.

Of course, there’s the possibility James stays in Cleveland. He’s said his family plays a huge part in his decision and it’s his hometown. Houston is also another possibility. If James wants to win rings, Houston is the place for him as he could join good friend Chris Paul and James Harden to create the most terrifying big three of all time. Further, he could join up with the likes of other notable free agents (and maybe Kawhi Leonard) in Los Angeles. Some of the greatest players in NBA history have played in L.A, can James add his name to the list?

Philadelphia is also going all in for James. James would complete the process and join youngsters Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid. If he wants to continue his domination of the East, Philly is the place for him. In addition, Miami and Boston are dark horse candidates. Given his relationship with Dwyane Wade and familiarity with South Beach, James could return to revamp the Florida franchise. He could also re-join Kyrie Irving in Boston and join a team that is already capable of competing for a title.

Even though there are a plethora of talented free agents this offseason, nobody compares to King James. As he nears the back end of his career, but shows no signs of slowing down, James may be looking for a few things. First, rings. James has carried teams to the Finals for years and he needs a bit of help to get through Golden State. Free agency could see James head to an already established contender to build his legacy and win some more hardware. Second, a change of scenery. James has brought everything and then some to Cleveland. He fulfilled his promise of bringing the city a title and he’s made four straight championships, there isn’t much else to do. The question on everyone’s mind now is where will he end up? All we can do now is wait on the edge of our seats for a decision.
