MLB DRAFT DFS Picks (DRAFT.com): Friday June 29th
Why do you need another DFS site? Because DRAFT combines the excitement of a season-long draft into one set of games!
Welcome to today’s edition of MLB DRAFT DFS Picks from FantasyCPR. The DRAFT app can be downloaded to your mobile device through your app store, or you can access their desktop site here.
I play quite a bit on DRAFT, and have always been a big fan of the snake draft format. On DRAFT, you roster one starting pitcher, two infielders, and two outfielders. They offer head-to-head, 3-man, 6-man and 10-man drafts that start upon filling. Also, they have a tournament format, where one contest will span a few days. The further you advance, the more you win. I play mostly the six-man contests for cash games, which payout to the top two spots.
My goal here will be to give you my strategy for drafting today on DRAFT, followed by my top 30 overall rankings. Strategy of course changes day by day, depending on what type of slate we are working with. I always start with my pitcher, as everything else revolves around that. After having completed my rankings for today and done a few six-man drafts, here is how I am attacking this slate.
MLB DRAFT DFS Picks Slate Overview:
Today we are working with a 14-game slate starting at 6:05 CST. We have some top arms in action and as always, some good bats in great spots. From now on, I am going to skip the weather talk and get right to it today. Breaking down weather the night before games is almost worthless, as so much can change in short notice. I will usually try to touch briefly on it from now on if there are some obvious PPD threats, but if it looks like it could late start or delay at most, I will leave it for the weathermen. I have stated before that it is a great idea to have a good weather app on your phone that allows to center right in on the stadiums.
Always be prepared to make swaps on DRAFT as they come up. With our slate overview behind us let’s move on to my top targets.
MLB DRAFT DFS Picks – Today’s Top Pitching Targets:
I felt like changing this up a bit so welcome to the new format! It is pretty easy to decipher throughout my rankings what that day’s particular strategy will be, so let’s mix it up a bit. Instead of giving you some basic vanilla strategy, like repeating the fact that the Infield position is usually deep throughout, and the outfield position drops off pretty dramatically usually in terms of “lock” type plays, I will opt to point out the guys I am actually targeting and drafting. I think this will be more helpful in terms of understanding why I have certain players ranked where they are. Similar to the rankings, followed by each target will be their overall ranking of 30 in parenthesis.
Trevor Bauer – Cleveland Indians – (8)
Sure I like deGrom against the Marlins, and Cole against Tampa Bay, but I really hate taking the top pitchers over the top hitters when there is a plethora of pitching available. Truth is deGrom and Cole are both in great spots and deserve the top two picks, I just can’t take either over Mike Trout or Mookie Betts at this point in the draft. I am targeting Bauer as a second rounder, but he isn’t quite making it there as of yet. If I have to settle for the next target, and end up with Betts or Trout with an infielder like JD Martinez or Paul Goldschmidt in the second, I am OK with that.
Patrick Corbin – Arizona Diamondbacks – (15)
Corbin has had an overall up-and-down season. He was dominant in the early goings of the season, then hit a funk where it almost looked like he was broken. He seems to back in form at the moment, as he shut down the Pirates in his last start. Pittsburgh manages to strike out at one of the lowest clips in the league, and Corbin went in and mowed down 12, en route to a 19 DP performance. He faced tonight’s opponent San Francisco back on June 5th, and picked up a win with seven K’s in 6.1 innings. He very well could exceed the production of the top three pitchers, and can make for a great third round pick after grabbing a solid core of hitters.
Sandy Alcantara – Miami Marlins – (29)
I haven’t had to go here yet after a few drafts, but it will happen. Marlins top prospect Sandy Alcantara is set to face the Mets tomorrow in his long awaited Marlins debut. The top prize in the Marcell Ozuna trade, the 22-year-old got a small taste of the bigs last year with the Cardinals. He struck out ten batters in 8.1 innings of relief, but did get hit a bit as he compiled a 4.32 ERA. It doesn’t get much better than facing the Mets in your season debut, and if I can’t get one of the top four aces by the third round, I will go to Alcantara.
MLB DRAFT DFS Picks – Today’s Top Hitter Targets:
IF – Paul Goldschmidt – Arizona Diamondbacks – (4)
I seem to be going to my guy Goldy often as I am seeing him continuing to fall to the second round. He actually has the high projection for once, but is still being passed on in favor of the top two outfielders and the top arms. Goldschmidt is still on a tear, and is one of the best in the game against lefties. It is a tough decision between him and Eric Thames, who I wrote up yesterday, (He homered by the way) but give me Goldy at home against the lefty Andrew Suarez and the Giants. Goldschmidt has faced Suarez just twice in his career and has one hit. A two-run home run.
IF – Nolan Arenado – Colorado Rockies – (19)
Arenado just hits home runs. Plain and simple. Doesn’t have to be at Coors Field, it can be anywhere. Simply because of the fact that the Rockies are not at home is causing Arenado to be available as late as the last round. His average sits at a cool .308, and he just connected with his 19th home run yesterday finishing the series in San Francisco. The Rockies are in LA now, where they will face lefty Rich Hill and the Dodgers. Gladly give me Arenado with my last pick today.
OF – Mookie Betts – Boston Red Sox – (2)
The first round is tough to predict today. Even on large slates like this it still is pretty predictable usually. But today, having three top pitchers going in the first round, I am seeing Betts fall as late as five overall. The Red Sox will travel into Yankee stadium for a weekend series, and will face left-hander C.C. Sabathia in the series opener.
No current Red Sox batter has had more success at the plate against Sabathia than Betts, as he is 10-for-24 in his career off of him, for a .417 average. I still take Mike Trout at one overall today, even though Betts is also in a great spot, and high on my radar. If I get one or the other today I will be happy, as drafting a top outfielder early might be the key today. If I miss on both however, I may shift to grabbing one of the top arms with my first pick.
OF – Justin Upton – Los Angeles Angels – (10)
Maybe things will change over the course of the day, but Upton is flat out being ignored thus far in the first three rounds. Now he isn’t facing a lefty tonight, but he is facing struggling Orioles starter David Hess, who has been giving it up to just about everybody. Hess hasn’t gotten out of the fourth inning in any of his last three starts, and has given up exactly five earned runs in each game. Outfield is super thin again, hence Upton’s high overall ranking, but like I said, waiting until the fourth or fifth round for your second outfielder and securing your pitcher seems like the way to go for tonight.
