Steve Kerr, Warriors close to finalizing more Finals appearances

Steve Kerr and Golden State Warriors close to finalizing contract extension, and possibly ensuring more trips to the Finals.

Get ready to see more of the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Steve Kerr is in the midst of finalizing an extension that will make him among the league’s highest paid coaches.

Kerr’s original deal, signed in 2014, was for five years and paid him $5 million annually. In his first four seasons at the head of the bench, Kerr has led the Warriors to four Finals appearances and three championships. In the lone year he didn’t win a title, Golden State set an NBA regular season record with 73 wins.

Kerr has a 265-63 record in the regular season and 63-20 in the playoffs.

While things have been great on the court, Kerr has battled off-court health issues that have caused him to miss time. Back surgery in 2015 kept him from the sidelines for 43 games in the 2015-16 regular season. In May 2017, Kerr underwent “a procedure” to correct spinal cord leakage stemming from the back surgery that caused him to miss 11 postseason games. Kerr has not been shy about talking about his health issues and opening wondered if they would keep him from signing an extension prior to the start of the 2017-18 season.

At 52 years old, it looks like Kerr is comfortable enough with his health to make the Finals for at least two more seasons.

The Warriors bench boss won Coach of the Year in 2016.

With Kerr locked in, the Warriors next offseason goal is to re-sign Kevin Durant. Maybe ownership can talk him into taking another pay cut now that Kerr’s salary will go up after the 2018-19 season.
