John Tavares may be the biggest NHL free agent hitting the market on July 1. But there are others preparing to earn big in free agency. Here are five free agents to follow.
NHL free agency is an exciting time and a chance for teams to get better. Besides prized free agent John Tavares, there are other names that everyone should keep an eye on — Paul Stastny, Calvin de Haan, Rick Nash, Tyler Boza and James van Riemsdyk.
Stastny rejuvenated his career with the Winnipeg Jets after being acquired at the deadline, centering a dynamic second line for the Jets. He will be in great demand for those teams that miss out on Tavares. His versatility and lack of centers on the market make him a free agent to watch.
Calvin de Haan is a top defensemen preparing for free agency. He may not be flashy, but he is a sturdy physical top four defender. He will in demand for teams looking for a boost on the blueline.
Rick Nash is another well-known name on the market. He may not be the elite scoring forward he once was, but he still holds plenty of value considering he scored 21 goals last season. Nash has had a good career so far and he will interest many teams looking for a veteran forward. The question remains whether he will instead choose to hang up his skates, however.
Another free agent to look at will be Tyler Bozak. He brings decent offensive skill and still holds decent value as center. Bozaxk will be one of the top offensive centers hitting free agency. Many teams should be in the scrum for his services.
