Maine: Mark Plummer

Normally if there is a professional golfer who has had a modicum of success on the PGA Tour, they would get the edge over an amateur player. That makes sense when you consider the notion that many amateurs tend to struggle when they are put up against the ranks of the PGA Tour. However, when you’re talking about state-specific players and unrivaled success at the amateur level, there comes a point where that person is impossible to ignore and not give the nod to.

That’s the case as it pertains to Maine and Mark Plummer. While many golf fans may not be wholly familiar with the mustachioed man with an unconventional swing, he was absolutely dominant in the state for over four decades. Even his seven runner-up finishes in the Main Amateur championship over 43 years would be impressive in their own right. However, what makes Plummer’s amount of success truly remarkable is that he was actually able to win the championship an unbelievable 13 times throughout his amateur career.

Speaking of amateur championships, perhaps Plummer’s closest brush with fame in the golf world came in the U.S. Amateur championship back in 1995. In that tournament, Plummer went into the semifinal and played tremendous golf before ultimately losing 2-up on the final hole of the match. His opponent in that match was only the great Tiger Woods. Not a bad feather for the Maine-native to put in his cap in addition to his success in the state alone.
