Rhode Island: Brad Faxon

Much like with our “champion” coming out of Oregon in Jacobsen, many golfing fans probably recognize Brad Faxon best for what he has done in the broadcast booth covering the sport. However, he was certainly one of the most intriguing players on the PGA Tour during his day. And though he happened to be born in New Jersey, Faxon was raised and still resides in Rhode Island, which is enough for him to capture the honor of being called the best in the state by us.

While he was raised and still resides in Barrington, Faxon went down south for his collegiate golfing career, going to Furman University in South Carolina. While there, he made his mark on the NCAA as he earned honors as a two-time All American and was able to win the Haskins Award in 1983, the distinction given to the best college golfer in the country. It was after achieving that honor that Faxon ultimately turned pro.

Once on the PGA Tour, Faxon wasn’t necessarily the bastion of winning and success. Yes, he did win eight times on the PGA Tour and 21 times as a professional throughout his career, which is certainly nothing to scoff at. However, he was best known for his ability on the greens when he was in his prime. He was an absolute stud with the putter in his hands and was considered the world’s best at that part of the game for a time. With that and his successes he did enjoy, he’s clearly the best of Rhode Island.
