California: Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods could ultimately be considered as either the best golfer from California or from Florida. Woods has made Jupiter Island, FL his residence and has stayed in the state for a large portion of his professional career. However, the 42-year old was born in Cypress, CA and attended Stanford University as an amateur before starting to take the golfing world completely by storm. Whichever state you want to consider him “from” though, he’s undoubtedly the best from there.

At just 42 years old, Woods is already second all-time in terms of PGA Tour wins, having notched an incredible 79 to this point in his career. That doesn’t even include his 40 wins on the European Tour throughout his career. And then there are the majors. Tiger currently holds 14 major championships, having won The Masters and PGA Championship four times apiece and the U.S. Open and The Open Championship three times each. Of course, his last major victory was in 2008 at the U.S. Open before his marriage and personal life fell completely apart in scandalous fashion.

After that, his play diminished and it seemed as if his age might derail his quest to catch Jack Nicklaus in terms of major wins. However, his comeback in 2018 seems legitimate as he’s come out playing at an extremely high level. If he can not only keep that up, but also improve as he gets comfortable again, we could see the Tiger Woods of old return and, ultimately, have a claim at being the best to ever play the game.
