France and Argentina tangle in the round of 16 on Saturday, July 1, at Kazan Arena in Kazan. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

The soccer gods really couldn’t have conjured up a better round of 16 matchup. France and Argentina, among the pre-tournament favorites and two of the best soccer-playing nations on the planet, will duke it out Saturday at Kazan Stadium in Kazan in the round of 16.

Both teams enter the knockout stage with two very different storylines. Les Bleus have gotten results, but played unconvincingly despite being undefeated and winning Group C. France’s third group stage match against Denmark, which ended scoreless, was not a great performance for a team that should have exerted their dominance.

Argentina, on the other hand, struggled through Group D and only clinched a berth after defeating Nigeria 2-1. Despite their struggles, Argentina look like a different team now. Winning will do that, even for a struggling side like La Albiceleste. Talk of a player mutiny involving embattled coach Jorge Sampaoli appears gone.

“Our players play with their heart,” Sampaoli told reporters. “They are true rebels.”

France can also play with heart. The team managed by Didier Deschamps includes such offensive weapons as Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba. A side that features a strong counter-attack, France, like Argentina, also need a wake-up call and to get their act together offensively in order to go on a run.

“We didn’t need to take risks in the match as this result was OK for everyone,” Deschamps said. “We tried to get a win, but the last 15 minutes was, shall we say, a neutral kind of match.”

Which teams show up for this game remains to be seen. Both France and Argentina have had their ups and downs at this World Cup. We’re now at the knockout phase. There needs to be a winner, even if the game goes to extra time and a shootout.

If what’s gone on in Russia over the past two weeks is any indication, expect another heart-stomping contest. It’s not entirely out of the question that Argentina, for all the mess they’ve found themselves in, could very well pull off an upset and advance to the quarterfinals.
