The Denver Nuggets have locked up Will Barton and Nikola Jokic for the long run. With a couple more years of Paul Millsap, why not go for the home run and try for LeBron James?

The Denver Nuggets have been very active in free agency this summer, even if it is just their guys they’ve signed. They’re going to re-sign Will Barton to a four-year $50 million dollar deal. Nikola Jokic opted out of his contract so he could get a five-year $148 million dollar max deal.

Add in Paul Millsap’s contract where he’s essentially owed $60 million over the next two years, and that’s a lot of money tied up for a team that missed the playoffs last season.

That isn’t stopping the Nuggets from trying to win free agency this summer.

The Denver Nuggets are trying to get in on the LeBron James sweepstakes. They’re in competition with the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but you never know, they could get a meeting with his representatives.

The Nuggets are now going to pay seven players over $10 million next season, which isn’t likely to last should they actually want to sign James. They’re going to have to gut their roster in some fashion to accommodate the best player in the league.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Nuggets were to somehow land James they would be in automatic contention for a title. Their roster would be constructed to his liking with shooters like Gary Harris and Jamal Murray plus another talent like Jokic, and you’ve got something cooking.

Obviously the Lakers are still considered the favorite to sign James, but the Nuggets are doing their due diligence in trying to meet with him. He’s the best player in the league so you’d be remised to not try and sign him if you could find a way to make it work.

Who knows how this will play out, but it will definitely be interesting.
